Historical Monuments of the Absheron Peninsula

Tour description

Atashgah Temple. At the beginning of our era, a Zoroastrian temple was built on the territory of the Surakhany village at the site of natural gas outlets. After the Arab conquest of Azerbaijan and the adoption of Islam by the inhabitants, the Zoroastrian fire temple was destroyed. Fire worship in Surakhany resumed after the 15th century due to the development of economic and cultural ties with India. In the 17th century, sources note Hindu pilgrims arriving in Baku to worship fire.

On the site of the ancient sanctuary of the Zoroastrian fire-worshippers, wealthy Indian merchants began to construct buildings. The earliest construction of the temple dates back to 1713. During the 18th century, chapels, cells, and a caravanserai grew around the sanctuary, attached to one another.

Gala Museum Complex. The village of Gala is one of the ancient settlements on the territory of the Absheron Peninsula. Today, part of the village is a historical and architectural reserve. Two museums operate on the territory of the reserve – an open-air historical and ethnographic museum, where the most ancient exhibits can be seen, and an antiques museum. Yanardag (Burning Mountain). This is a natural eternal flame, burning since ancient times on a hillside near Baku. Today, there are a small number of such natural sources of gas combustion in the world, and most of them are located in Azerbaijan. The natural eternal fire of Yanardag is caused by the leakage of combustible natural gas from a large deposit under the Absheron Peninsula. The ignition of this fire occurred in antiquity. Marco Polo also mentions this phenomenon. On Absheron, these fires were an object of worship for followers of Zoroastrianism.
